The mumbling of a grumbler is lovelier to me than the murmuring of a woodland stream. What do we gain by knowing that the notion of the clerk in Kafka was perhaps taken from Walser? He has his airs about him that are disgusting to me and he appears to me to be significantly unhappy. Jakob von Gunten Robert Walser Limited preview – Prior to reading this book the first time, my only introduction to Walser’s work had been The Robbertranslated by the gifted Susan Bernofsky, but jjakob a difficult delight that book was and I deemed that book a masterpiece.

And if you don’t get yourself through the entire book you never get to the part when Jakob says, ” Apart from being inside a claustrophobic institution, one that purports to be a training school for valets, but offers no instruction, employs teachers who are asleep, englosh dead, or only appear to be dead, or have turned to stone, in any case the pupils can get nothing from themapart from the feeling that life here is arrested, that ebglish is a kind of ante-room to life, a state of infinite waiting, apart from all that there is no firm narrative ground underfootquagmires erupt, the passing landscape bleaches out at the corner of my eye and turns into the stuff of nightmare.
Kraus’s vocabulary embodies an impression which seems to shape out vo character of humility, servitude. A Gift Or a Curse?

In fact, the school is a bit of a swindle. I see him as a zero as he obviously does me. As a book where for the most part nothing happens how can I say that — a murder attempt a tragic death — yet, these are gungen prompts for the narrator’s swirling thoughts. He would never read it again. Walser really is a master at the microcosmic: If so, you’re a better German Romantic or possibly post-modernist or possibly surrealist than I am.

L’anelito di Robert Walser era quello di penetrare il mistero, farsene carico, violare alcuni codici di quel mondo impenetrabile e trasmetterceli in qualche modo. One day I shall be laid low by a stroke, and then everything, all these confusions, this longing, this unknowing, all this, the gratitude and ingratitude, this telling lies and self-deception, this thinking that ovn knows and yet never knowing anything, will come to an end.
That is so beautiful, so noble. As much as I love literature, I have always felt that it has the tendency to mislead and subsequently create victims of society. The prose is an escapade built around idea of tales full of surprise, adventure and paradoxes; probably a mischievous blocking of dramatic thrust, also a parody of epic breath.
I believe my initial rejection to the Middleton translation had everything to do with being a Walser novice, as today I do not vvon with me the same negative feelings for Middleton and his work that Ggunten did back then.
