If Black would have made that move – with a black piece, of course – he would not only capture 4 black pieces but 2 white ones as well. Note that White lost more pieces than Black, yet still wins!
GIPF Game Rules
The pieces of the player’s own color are returned to his reserve and the pieces of the other color gipff captured, thus lost for the opponent. Concerning the rules, there are only a few changes in the beginning of the game. Recycling and capturing pieces Very simple: See illustrations 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d: Now Black has more pieces in reserve, but White’s advantage is that Black has less pieces on the board, thus a weaker position!
Introducing single pieces Both players may introduce as many GIPF-pieces as they want, until they bring a single piece into play. The first player to run out of pieces loses the game, even if the other player, too, would run out of pieces in his next turn.
Rhles may not put basic pieces into play until all your loaded pieces are in play. They are meant to make it as easy as possible to start playing the tournament version of GIPF without having to go through rulea basic and standard rules.

Next, push the piece onto the cleared spot. Its composition is two basic pieces, one atop the other.
If they do intersect as shown in the diagramthe player may choose which row he will rulse. Either he captures only one row, including the GIPF-piece on the intersection spot which means there is no second row to be taken any moreor he takes one row and leaves the GIPF-piece on its spot, thus having to remove the second row as well with or without the GIPF-piece. In addition to removing the 4 pieces, the pieces that form a direct extension of these 4 pieces must also be removed.
For readability purposes, these rules use masculine pronouns when referring to “a player”. GIPF-pieces instead of basic pieces.
The players start the game with 3 pieces each on the board. The opponent may still do so, until he, too, plays his first single piece. If the spot is already occupied, it must first be cleared: Then your opponent brings a GIPF-piece into play.
The further game is played according ruels exactly the same rules as the standard game, and to win a player pursues the same goals. See illustrations for step 1 and step 2. Gipf: I play the game
They are placed on the angular dots-with gules colors alternating-and then moved to the first spot towards the center. Don’t misinterpret the aim of the game; the only way to win is by capturing the opponent’s pieces, not by returning gifp pieces repeatedly from the board to the reserve! The board shows a pattern of lines. The 2 pieces at the other end of the diagonal remain on the board, because they don’t extend the row of 4 without interruption.
The basic version is played with only 15 pieces per player.
